So you found the club. You've lurked the site, maybe even the Discord. There's an event coming up and part of you wants to go — and another part of you has already drafted three excuses. This guide is for that second part.
What Actually Happens at a Meetup
Less than you fear, more fun than you expect. A typical event is some mix of: a screening with commentary that gets progressively less respectful, casual games, manga talk, snacks appearing from nowhere, and people arguing the exact debate from this article. Check the Events page for what's coming — each event page tells you where and when.
The Fears, Addressed
- "I haven't seen enough anime." Nobody is checking. The club has day-one beginners and people who can name a key animator from a single frame, and both are having a good time. "What should I watch?" is genuinely one of our favorite questions.
- "I don't know anyone." Correct — that's what the meetup is for. Anime is the cheat code for small talk: "what are you watching this season?" works on literally every person in the room.
- "What if it's cliquey?" The exec's whole job is making sure it isn't. If you're standing near the door looking uncertain, someone WILL adopt you. This is a threat and a promise.
- "I can't stay the whole time." Come for twenty minutes. Leaving early is completely normal; showing up is the entire achievement.
Actual Practical Tips
- Check the event page for room and time — campus buildings are a dungeon crawl, budget five minutes for getting lost.
- Join the Discord first if you want the gentlest on-ramp. Recognizing two usernames in real life makes walking in ten times easier.
- Bring nothing. Seriously — no supplies, no fee, no anime knowledge minimum. Bring a friend if it helps.
- Say you're new. Magic words. You'll get the tour, the good snacks, and probably three watchlist recommendations before you sit down.
See you there?
